Meade 4.5 inch F8
reflector telescope
910 mm focal length Model number
DS114ATE. Included is an electronic eyepiece which
is good for viewing the moon and planets on a TV
screen, Battery pack (requires 10AA batteries, Autostar #494
handheld computer controller, full
size Altazimuth aluminum tripod with
accessory tray, Meade
star navigator software, three .965
inch eyepieces (SR4
mm, H12.5 mm, H25mm) and a 3X Barlow
for a maximum magification of 325x and
instruction manuals.
I purchased the telescope new for about $250 a
couple years ago. It has been used very little
and is in excellent condition, except: I tried to
use the goto mount for a larger telescope and the
mount either got damaged or out of alignment.
Because of this the goto features will not work
properly. The motors seem to work fine and the
hand held controller works. Someone with good
mechanical aptitude may be able to fix the mount
so the goto works, but I couldn't figure out
where the problem lies. Seems to be a little
friction causing the mount to bind when rotated
under motor control. That isn't a problem
when moving the scope manually. It just causes
enough friction to prevent the motors from
running the proper speed for the goto function to
work right.
Meade star navigator software (included) Turns
your PC into a Planetarium. Great on cloudy and
otherwise too cold evenings to be out of doors.
What little I used the telescope, it seemed to be
of good optical quality.
If you wanted the goto feature to work and
couldn't fix it, the mount itself, I think can be
purchased for around $100 or less from a Meade
distributor.
Photo shows closeup of mount, hand controller,
focuser which looks like it might be able to
accept 2 inch eyepieces, in addtion to the .965
eyepieces that are included. The box in the
background is what the telescope comes in and it
is large.
I've seen the Meade electronic eyepiece alone
sell for $60 or more on eBay.
